In Rocca di Papa, within the woods of Monte Cavo and the Via Sacra, an open air museum comes to life. Monte Cavo is most known for the Via Sacra and its famous Belvedere viewpoint of both Lake Nemi and Albano, and now the “Museo Diffuso del Bosco” The Widespread Forest Museum offers a whole new way to observe and rediscover the woods. Featuring 5 sections of sculptures, instillations and amazing panoramas, it blends art, history and nature, creating an innovative cultural experience that shows off the area’s natural and historic heritage.
1. FLORA
The first and most impressive section is Flora, a 4-meter-tall wooden figure dedicated to nature, created by artist Marco Martalar.
Crafted from reclaimed wood and located along the historic Via Sacra, the work depicts a female figure, an interpretation of Mother Nature, gazing at the earth with a thoughtful gaze, a symbol of respect and connection with nature.
2. CORTEN STEEL ANIMALS
Following the via Sacra, a road that was built in the 7th century BC to lead to the once existing Temple of Jupiter Latiaris, the exhibition continues with Corten steel animals camouflaged among the tree trunks. Along the route boars, birds, squirrels, and other local fauna can be spotted. I see many of these live animals around my home, therefore they were particularly endearing to see them as part of the installations; the display represents the area we live in.
The route continues past the Belvedere the spectacular viewpoint of the two lakes, and continues on down to bar La Baita di Monte Cavo, where you can stop for refreshments and a some outdoor games (open on weekends until mid October).
3. HEAD AMOUNG THE PLANTS
Nearby the bar you’ll find the third installment “Head among the Plants”, suggesting a connection with nature and well-being.
4. GARDENS OF WONDER
Further on is there fourth installment, an open-air art trail featuring outdoor reproductions of Gianlorenzo Palazzi's “Gardens of Wonders” and other of the artist’s works.
5. THE FOREST BINOCULARS
The fifth installment features “The Forest Binoculars”. Thanks to the installation, it brought me on a new trail to this dreamy viewpoint. The view is absolutely stunning here, and easily rivals the Belevedere as it feels more intimate. Take your time to breath it all in.

How to Arrive and Practical info:
Arrival and parking:
Park in Parcheggio Campi di Annibadli, Rocca di Papa and walk up via Monte Cavo Campagna. It's a 15 minute walk to the top to see Flora. You can also find parking directly on via Monte Cavo Campagna on the first block coming from town.
Public Transport:
From Rome - Cotral buses leaving from Anagnina go to Rocca di Papa center.

Time and level of difficulty
The walk took me approximately 2 hours round trip. Depending on your speed , rest stops and time admiring views and artwork, it could be longer.
A good portion of the walk is uphill.
Between the fourth installment and the binoculars the walk is uphill and the path turns rocky: Use your discretion, but I wouldn't recommend the walk towards the binoculars for young children or the elderly.
Note before you go…
The exhibt runs until October 25th. Dogs are allowed. The bar La Baita di Monte Cavo is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday unti mid-October. Bring your own refreshments, especially water, as there are no fountains on the route.
